Dementia can happen to anybody. It happened to Narelle’s mum, Joy. When the diagnosis came, Narelle didn’t know what to do, where to go for help, or what to expect.

“I rang thinking no one’s going to pick up the phone, it’s 9.30pm at night,” she shared. “But within three rings, a real person actually picked up the phone.”

The number of Australians living with dementia is expected to increase to more than 1 million by 2065, more than double the present number.

The National Dementia Helpline responded to over 5,000 after hour calls in 2025-26.

1.7 million carers, family members and friends are involved in the care of someone living with dementia.
